OPERATIONALISING THE CLIMATE ACTION MARKET INCENTIVES GUIDE FOR CASSAVA VALUE CHAIN

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has contextualised its stake in the shared economy-wide respon­sibility. It has refined this stake especially under the changing climate, which threatens to shrink, and claw-back Uganda’s economic growth and progress established over years.

Climate change threatens to affect most economies in Africa. It is projected to erode equity and incomes in the continent by a massive 75%. Uganda, the pearl of Africa, is not immune to this climate change driven devastation. Uganda is ranked the 15th most vulnerable country to climate change and the 49th least ready country to respond to this looming climate change risk.

Market incentives for climate action: EBAFOSA has worked with national standards bodies to develop a climate action market incentive guide on the cascade of standards agro-enterprises in the country need to comply with to ensure they tap into health, environment, climate & quality conscious consumers who are increasing.

Leveraging EBA / clean energy to create climate action enterprises: work has leveraged complementarity between EBA-driven agriculture with clean energy to unlock enterprises that scale both EBA & clean energy.

Operational Level: at operational level, EBAFOSA is providing a common framework that is convening enterprises in agriculture, clean energy, micro-finance, Information Communication Technology – to foment market driven partnerships that enhance climate actions. Examples of operational impacts;

Policy Level: at policy level, EBAFOSA is supporting countries establish inter-ministerial policy task forces. Example of policy impacts;

Why EBAFOSA: achieving the UN Environment aim of scaling climate actions that enhance socioeconomic wellbeing needs stakeholders from diverse sectors – government, private sector, development partners, individual citizens – working towards the same end-goal. And to achieve this, a common and inclusive framework is needed to convene all these actors for partnerships. So EBAFOSA stands at the crossroad of multiple global change challenges - land degradation, desertification and recurrent drought and Climate Change that are the root causes of food insecurity in Africa.
